Summer is here which means it's time to try and disconnect a little bit. There's no better way than to pick up a book. We've rounded up a few books worth checking out.

Ms. Hempel Chronicles
by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum

A collection of eight interconnected stories about a middle school English teacher, Ms. Hempel Chronicles follows Beatrice Hempel through a year of teaching. We get to see as both she and her students grow and change in front of each other. It's a very entertaining read.






Short Girls: A Novel

by Bich Minh Nguyen

Short Girls tells the story of two Vietnamese-American sisters, Van and Linny Luong, who come home for their father's American citizenship ceremony. Polar opposites of each other, the sisters work together to throw him a party as well has help with a reality show audtion. While doing so, both learn more about themselves and their heritage. It's a story that's sure to hit home at various points with many readers.





The House of Bilqis
by Azhar Abidi

In The House of Bilqis, "Bilqis Khan, a widowed university professor, is dismayed when her only son Samad marries Kate, a white Australian woman, and settles in Melbourne rather than returning home to Pakistan." Although her son wants her to join them in Australia, Bilqis remains in Karachi. A moving story that captures the emotions involved in parent-child relationships, especially as children grow up and move on.
