Me, Me, Me

Actress Bai Ling Opens Up

by Audrey Crone
She is one of a very few Asian faces that regularly shows up in movies, TV shows, magazines and online. Born in China to professor parents who exposed her to the world of arts at a young age, actress Bai Ling opens up to JADE Magazine about about herlife, ambitions, mental institution, and her first book Nipples.

**************

Have you always wanted to act? What was your childhood like in terms of conrtributing to you wanting to act?

Being an actress is my destiny. I have a very artistic family. My father is a professor who teaches composition of music, my mother is a professor who teaches literature. There were a lot of arts involved when I was growing up. I learned Violin and pipa (a traditional Chinese instrument).

When I was a child, except for music, I was an extremely shy child. Speaking was almost not involved in my world, I didn't talk at all, I just froze if I was being asked a question.

But I always knew there was a vivid, magic world inside of me. I have gifts that so wanted me to express them, to give, to burn the fire and show the beauty and magic to the entire world. It's like a magnet. I just have to follow.

You've had many parts in Hollywood films and on TV shows, which did you enjoyed the most and why? Which part did you enjoyed the least?

I enjoy all my work, there is no good or bad, because it was all fun and wonderful and I got to work with many talented directors and beautiful stars. I appreciate everything that is happening in my life because that is the nature of life.

Of course, I became a wonderful close friends with the sexy Richard Gere. It was my very first leading role and was with him and I did not really speak English then. It was a beautiful experience, except his smile I understood almost nothing. He was so generous to me, so wanted me to be good and supported me all the way in the film Red Corner. He is special to me, and of course many others I want to thank all of them for trusting me!!!

The least was I did not wanted to shave my long hair. I have never cried that much as the day I shaved my hair, but Tuptim is so beautiful when she shaved her head and was executed in the brutal burning sun by the king for her love.

What is your ideal part?

All the Oscar-winning actresses' parts I could do. I want you, my dear readers and my director producer friends, to watch all my movies. They are so totally different from each other. I am so excited waiting for that excellent part. I know it's there. The role just needs my magic touch, the role does not have to be written for me but I will play her or him, and you will be so surprised and proud, because I got the gift just for you!

How difficult has it been for you, as an Asian woman, to be cast in films?

I see everything in a positive light. Difficulties are wonderful gifts in life to challenge you to be better and its fun! Often in life, if there is a thing that is difficult for you, that means you have the ability to overcome it. Otherwise it would never occur. Anything in life, it's a journey.

Asian woman? I am just a beautiful, wild, sexy, talented creature landed from the moon to give you gifts.

What is your favorite movie?

Avatar, so beautiful!!! I sat once next to Mr. James Cameron on a plane from LA to Vancouver, I did not know who he was in the beginning. We talked for a long time, I just wished I knew he was making this other-worldly, beautiful film then. I would be perfect in his film because he thinks out of box. In fact, he breaks many boxes and then makes them into a magic one.

What do you do when you are not working??

Eat, sleep, pee...then repeat it again soon after. I eat a lot, especially desserts. I love sweets. And I write, too. I have 2 books. One is called Sex in Tibet, another one is Nipples. Please check my blog at officialbailing.com, then you will know me better than what's in your mind right now. I am crazy but in a good way.

And, yes, when I am not doing anything, it's almost like everything slows down, like one minute becomes one hour and 18 minutes.

You've spoken openly about your time in a mental hospital when you were younger. How do you think that has affected you in your later life?

A mental hospital is a beautiful place because it keeps society in order. I am telling you, those people can be so crazily dangerous!!! I am talking about the people in the mental hospital, but to them the society people are crazily dangerous. It all depends on the perspective you are taking.

I had a lovely yet crazy time there with the crazy moments of life that are precious for me. Just like when I was 14 years old and lived in Tibet for 3 years as a soldier, a miracle when I think back.

In the mental hospital, I could be suddenly locked anywhere at any time for a whole day. One time I was locked in the bathroom for a whole day, still don't know why, but I found my joy by looking out through a tiny little window, how the snow from the sky gently touched the ground so gentle and almost quietly singing a beautiful love song to her secret lover on earth. They gave us medicines and the drugs made time lost its rhythm everything becomes so slow.

I remember one time, I got up in the middle of the night and asked the nurse, "Can you let me out? I am an actress, I need to shoot my movie, the director and the whole film crew are waiting!" Can you imagine that? Of course, the nurse was freaked out, she thinks I am nuts and got so scared. She used this electricity thing on me. Wow!!! See, when you are telling the truth, then you become a crazy person.

How this affected me later is a beautiful thing you would not believe and that is: Keep dreaming, a beautiful world needs dreamers, and only dream worth living.

Tell us about your book Nipples. What is it about? How did you come up with concept and title? When will it be released?

Nipples are beautiful erotic creatures gifted to us, especially to women for children, for men. When the child is first born, the first thing he or she ever touches is a mother's nipples. It's nurturing, it's love, and for men nipples are big part of the romance. So the book is about love, romance, sexy in the modern world. It is very intimate and honest.

Since my Playboy cover came out, people always make fun of my big nipples. Actually, my nipples got nothing to do with me but are nature's gift for me when I was born. I got lucky that I do have beautiful and erotic nipples, that's my gift, I am proud of it.

I think after my Tibet book, Nipples will come out.

There are always pictures of you in the gossip columns in brow-raising outfits. Do you have a stylist? How do you come up with your outfits? Is there anything you wouldn't wear out??

I don't read much. I don't even watch many movies, so I do not really know what's out there about me or anyone, and it does not really matter to me. I care only about beauty and the positive lights that brighten me and catch my attention.

I have eight little spirits in me. One of the girls, she is so crazy, advanced and free and just wants to have fun and show the world her beauty and magic.

No stylist. You ask if there is anything I wouldn't wear out. The answer is: I love to wear nothing. Like my blog says: Naked seduction, how exciting is that.

Do you read what is written about you? How do you handle the negative comments? ?

I already said I don't read much. You ask me how do I handle the negative comments. The answer is I don't handle them. They try to find life but they can't, then they die. Actually the smart intelligent people know me. You can not trash me no matter how much you try. The negativity only serves to hurt the negative people. I suggest you take the negative words and actions out of your life. Let your heart open to hear the music of the universe; there is only beauty.

Are you as outrageous in private as you appear in public?

I guess you will have to find out in private. My answer is, of course, outrageous is my authentic. Even lady gaga is learning from me.

Any thoughts/advice for our readers?

I always believe in the positive. Life dances in a beautiful circle, so give and live in the positive! You are a star in your own brilliant way, so be the beautiful you. Don't let anyone takes that away. There are two words I would like to share with you, my dear readers, remember those two words every day in everything you do in life in love in work and that is GIVE & FORGIVE.
