On Point: The Ladies Behind DisgrasianA blog wasn't even on the radar when Jen Wang and Diana Nguyen began writing together. "It started as something that we sent back and forth," explains Diana. "We didn't intend to blog. It was more a conversation between us," continues Jen, "we really got into it but there was no grand plan."From that back and forth came Disgrasian.com, a blog of sharp, humorous social commentary on a variety of Asian American-related topics. "We're not a newsy blog, one that breaks news, but we are tied to current events," says Jen.
Covering topics ranging from Lt. Dan Choi to Tila Tequila, the two-year-old site is a reflection of Jen and Diana's thoughts and opinions. "We're not writing from an ideological point of view, we're writing from a personal one. It's just two women writing from personal experience about their views," says Jen.
While Diana and Jen are close friends and share many of the same views, they work separately on the blog for the most part. "We work autonomously. Sometimes we bounce ideas off each other, " says Diana, "It depends on the project but it's very rare that we sit and write in the same room together." Both have full-time jobs outside of Disgrasian but they treat the blog like a full-time job as well. "It's round-the-clock. There's not a moment when you're not thinking of blogging," says Diana. "It turns all of your interests to the blog," Jen says, "I can't go the movies, a show or concert without thinking about whether I can blog about it." In addition to daily postings, there are also vlogs, contributions to The Huffington Post and DAME Magazine, and speaking engagements. However, both enjoy it and don't see an end anytime soon.
"It's still a work in progress," says Jen, "We're looking into expanding the blog at some point to include guest contributors."
We didn't start Disgrasian.com to fill a void [of Asian American voices]," says Diana. "It was just two friends starting a dialog. It'll probably end as personally as it started." For the time being, we can continue to enjoy Jen and Diana's sometimes funny, sometimes impassioned, but always on point writings. |
